Ashland Resident Interns at Heartland Point

2016 Sep 22

ASHLAND, Ohio -- Ashland resident Chelsea Arthur, who is a senior hospitality management major at Ashland University, completed a summer internship with Heartland Point in Orrville, Ohio. The internship was under the supervision of general manager, Cindy Summers.

Arthur is the daughter of Doug and Mindy Hiller of Ashland. She is a 2011 graduate of Ashland High School.

The Heartland Education Community Inc. is "a local and unique nonprofit that works closely with business leaders, the public, nonprofit organizations and schools to shift the focus from school to education and responsibility from schools to the community," said Arthur. "Heartland has been a part of the Orrville community for 25 years. In 2006, Heartland opened Heartland Point in downtown Orrville as a location for activities of the Heartland Education Community. Heartland Point is a community where citizens can find out what is happening in the community, and become more involved and engaged in lifelong learning opportunities."

Arthur was in charge of the Orrville Walks program. This program brings together citizens and local businesses. People walk every week and sign up for raffles and other prizes. Arthur said "I helped with the Heartland Anniversary Celebration, summer camps, public relations, as well as organizing and collaborating with community leaders. I also recorded data from walks and other classes for the cafe."

Her biggest project was Orrville Walks, which is a 22-week walk that takes place at Heartland Point. "I am in charge of keeping up the data, talking to sponsors, setting up the stations and answering questions from participants," Arthur said. "I have also helped with Building Blocks camp, which is a camp for kids where they build projects."

From this experience, she has learned how to keep track of data, be organized, how to be professional in meetings and how to be a leader.

When asked how her classes at Ashland University helped prepare her for this internship, Arthur said, "AU helped me learn to multi-task and take on multiple projects at one time." Arthur believes this will also help her in class because she has become a better, more organized leader as well as a multi-tasker.

After graduation, Arthur plans to do event planning for a sports arena or a concert venue.
