Ashland University Marketing Student Brittany Wilson Interned for Huron County Development Council

2014 Nov 12

Willard resident Brittany Wilson, a senior marketing major at Ashland University, served as an intern in Norwalk this summer for Huron County Development Council.

Alongside her supervisor and the executive director, Carol Knapp, Wilson completed a variety of tasks and obtained many experiences. Wilson imported two years of files into a data base system. She also helped redesign an organization logo and other parts of the website.

Wilson contacted businesses, scheduled appointments, visited and gleaned information from the owners, and typed reports concerning what was discussed during visits.

In regards to the company, Wilson said, "The Huron County Development Council I worked for this summer is very small and a lot of people are unaware of it. There is a president, executive director and the executive director has an assistant. The Huron County Development Council focuses on business retention and expansion, grant administration and incentive programs."

During the internship, she conducted business retention and expansion interviews with business professionals. The internship provided her with many networking opportunities and it enhanced her communication skills.

When asked how classes at AU prepared her for the internship, Wilson said, "My business classes at AU prepared me for the internship by providing me with excellent teamwork and communication skills. I communicated with a lot of business professionals and conducted personal interviews. If I had not taken classes like Business Communication and Salesmanship, I wouldn't have been able to do my interviews as effectively and efficiently as possible. During my internship, I was also given the opportunity to assist with the redevelopment of a website. Some marketing classes that helped me in this area of my internship were Social Media Marketing and Marketing Research and Analysis. By taking these classes, I had knowledge on how redevelop the content of the website to attract more traffic and viewers."

She said the internship will help in her AU classes by providing her with strong communication skills involving her professors, classmates and oral presentation.

After graduation, she plans on finding a marketing job around Nashville, Tenn. Her dream job would be to work in the marketing department at Sony Entertainment.

Wilson, who is the daughter of Darrell and Debra Wilson of Willard, is a 2011 graduate of Willard High School.

She is involved on the AU campus as a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Outside of the campus, Wilson is currently participating in a marketing internship at Hedstrom.
