Butler, Pa. Resident Named Intern of the Month at Ashland University

Butler, Pa. resident Laurena Shick, a junior at Ashland University majoring in fashion merchandising and marketing, was named Ashland University's October Intern of the Month after she discussed her summer internship as a styling intern for Rachel Vallozzi, a freelance wardrobe stylist.

During her internship, Shick accomplished huge tasks as a styling intern, proving to be an added value to Vallozzi's freelance work.

Throughout the summer, Shick assisted Vallozzi with every step in the process of wardrobe styling for commercials. She communicated with actors to confirm sizes, shopped according to given specifications, organized the purchases, and built outfit possibilities. Additionally, Shick assisted in fittings and adjustments, managed the wardrobe room while filming, and completed returns and final paperwork. Shick also assisted Vallozzi during meetings with private clients who hire her for personal shopping advice.

Shick, commenting on her experience, said, "Throughout this internship, I have acquired several connections with people in my field that may lead to future job opportunities. I was also lucky to find this internship in nearby Pittsburgh. Additionally, the knowledge I gained about styling and job opportunities in the TV and film industries makes me more confident in my abilities and ambitious in my career goals."

Shick believes it is important for other students to be ambitious when it comes to completing internships in their field. She said, "I learned so much about fashion's place in the advertising industry and I was introduced to possible career paths I did not even know existed. You never know where a great internship might lead you."

Shick is a 2015 graduate of Slippery Rock Area High School.
