Dayton Resident Selected for Ashland University's National Bateman Case Study Competition Team

2017 Nov 20

Dayton resident, Erin Staley, a junior public relations and strategic communication major at Ashland University, has been selected as a member of Ashland University's National Bateman Case Study Competition Team. This team is under the supervision of faculty advisor, Amanda J. Weed.

She is the daughter of Jim and Susan Staley of Dayton and is a 2015 graduate of Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School.

In commenting on the students selected, Amanda J. Weed, faculty advisor of PRSSA and the Bateman Competition Team, stated, "The students who were selected for the Bateman Case Study Competition team represent the best qualities of Ashland University's Public Relations & Strategic Communication major. Each of the team members brings a unique combination of knowledge, skills and experience in public relations that are essential to succeed in among a talented field of teams from across the U.S."

Established in 1973, the Bateman Case Study Competition provides college students with the opportunity to compete with other students from across the country, and gain experience in planning a comprehensive campaign. Each year, Bateman selects an active organization or company as the sponsor organization, allowing students to work for a real-life client.

"I am beyond excited to be a part of the Ashland University Bateman Case Study Competition Team. This will give me real life public relations experience that can help in my future career," Staley said.

For the 2018 competition, students are asked to create a campaign for With Purpose, a non-profit organization "dedicated to creating a world where kids with cancer have access to safe and effective treatment options." The campaign must increase awareness about the problems regarding childhood cancer treatment by finding creative methods to address the audience's current level of understanding about the issues. In addition, the team must use unique strategies to encourage young adults to participate with the organization.

The students will conduct their campaign from Feb. 15, 2018 to March 15, 2018. Case studies must be submitted in April, and the top three teams will be notified by April 23, 2018. The top three finalists will present their campaign to a With Purpose representative and will be recognized at the PRSSA National Conference. The first-place team will receive a prize of $3,500, while the second-place team will receive a $2,500 award and the third-place team will receive a $1,500 award.
