Hinckley Resident Completes Summer Internship

2016 Sep 20

Hinckley resident Matthew DePiero, who is a sophomore supply chain management major at Ashland University, completed a summer internship with Darice Inc. in Strongsville, Ohio. The internship was under supervision of the company's vice president of operations, Brian Alberty.

DePiero is the son of Gregg and Loralie DePiero of Hinckley and is a 2015 graduate of Brunswick High School.

"The company is a division of Michael's Craft Centers," DePiero said. "They distribute craft supplies and accessories to Pat Catans, Michael's, Walmart, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Amazon and Meijer's."

DePiero worked in the supply chain division where he dealt with delivery management and tracked current purchase orders to ensure a timely delivery. He also worked in the Procurement Department where he learned and observed purchasing operations for the company. He spent some time, lastly, working with inventory control and managing various company inventories.

"Throughout this experience I learned how to work with people in a corporate office who have different strengths and weaknesses," DePiero said. "I also recognized how employees overcame daily challenges in their respective departments."

DePiero believes that his information technology class at Ashland University allowed him to perform various tasks on Microsoft Excel. This also gave him the confidence to modify other documents for which he was responsible. Thanks to his internship, DePiero believes he can now see the challenges businesses face on a daily basis and be able to identify how to overcome those challenges.

"I feel that pursuing a career in supply chain management is still my plan after graduation," DePiero said. "My goal is help make any company more successful. I saw how important it is for this company to distribute its products to their customers in timely and efficient manner."
