Bates is majoring in child and family studies. She is the daughter of Donald and Kathi Bates of Dalton. Bates is a 2009 graduate of Dalton High School.

Alpha Lambda Delta honors students who in their first or first two semesters have achieved a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. The honor society's purpose is to encourage superior academic achievement among students in their first year, to promote intelligent living, and to assist students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals.
