Margot Waid Completed Business Internship at Ashland University

2011 Sep 27

Margot Waid of Jefferson, OH, completed an internship through the Dauch College of Business and Economics at Ashland University.

According to Dr. Khushwant Pittenger, business professor and internship coordinator at Ashland, these required business internships are a good way for students to explore their career choices, network with professionals, build their resumes and develop applicable skills.

Waid interned with McKinley Village in Denali, AK, under the supervision of Restaurant Manager Amber Stringer.

Waid's duties included working as a cook, hostess, and barista, eventually becoming a manager of Quigley's Coffee Corner and helping to supervise the restaurant mostly in the morning.

Her major projects included rearranging the coffee corner and implementing different ideas into recreating the coffee corner to help raise sales, as well as creating a small manual to help her barista understand different ways to make coffee cart items and provide product information.

Waid said she learned how to better supervise returning employees while also training new workers throughout the season, along with learning the ABI system the company uses and the inventory, scheduling, and money transfers systems.

"It helps me to have a real life experience to relate to when learning new aspects of my major in the classroom," Waid said.

Waid is majoring in hospitality management.

Waid is the daughter of Harlan and Lorraine Waid.

Waid is a graduate of Jefferson Area High School.
